a story of unexpected fashion improvisation

As a photographer I find challenges creative and unexpected circumstances ways to push myself out of my comfort zone. My most recent shot with Carlotta was one of those situations when I had to improvised and experiment, in order to get the results I wanted.

The story was quiet simple - we kept waiting for a good weather to shoot, for me it’s been a while since I did last fashion shot so first date possible we scheduled to meet. The tricky part was that a week before I broke my camera - and by my camera I mean the regular, digital Canon, which always makes me feel comfortable and with which I can use my favourite lenses to be sure of good results. My initial plan was to replace the digital with analog, that’s something I was thinking of for a while, to shoot full story on film, but, well, bad luck, the battery was gone just after we started. Lucky enough I still had in my backpack a back-up - Olympus Pen E-PL 9, little beauty I always keep with me, great for travel and every-day-amusements, although not really tested in fashion.

I define my photography style mostly with close portraits or fashion shots with bokeh visible by using lowest amount of aperture possible, either with 50mm or 85mm preferably. The Olympus Pen was a challenge firstly by the lens parameters - 14-42/3.5-5.6 is not really what I am used to see through my camera. Not to mention lack of a viewfinder, so composing was far more difficult just by looking to the screen. Of course there is no point of comparing full frame professional camera to the mirrorless, even the good one. Not to mention post production problems with lack of shooting RAW files possibility.

So it was different, it was unusual. I felt lack of full control on the photos, especially in the beginning, and I must admit, I felt like few years back, when starting photography. But then step by step, frame by frame it seemed like I can get a nice results and learn an interesting lesson through the experience. I picked up best shots, some in black and white, come in colour. The editing was mostly about colour correction, as I usually do, no huge photoshopping. It feels like we managed to capture the feeling of last warm day that still-summer, not-yet-autumn.
